An Anthology of Post-Apocalyptic Literature

January 1 through June 30, 2017

BANJAXED BOOKS is proud to announce short story submissions for Chaos of Hard Clay, an anthology concerning post-apocalyptic fiction. Whether it’s nuclear war, environment out of control, grey goo, zombies, or any other contributing factor, Chaos of Hard Clay will be an exhilarating and terrifying look into a world gone wrong.

Everyone is encouraged to submit a story–if you think the apocalyptic element in your work is somewhat lacking, send it anyway. As long as it plays a part of the basic structure, the story will be considered.

Formatting should be typical. Courier New or Times New Roman, pt. 12, should be used. If you are unfamiliar with formatting a raw manuscript, please check out this link and follow it to the letter.

If you write under a pseudonym, please use your real name in the left-hand corner of the first page (along with your address, telephone number, and email address).

G. Allen Cook, Executive Editor, began his publishing career writing for newspapers and magazines. He has written 20 plays, eight of them full-length musicals.

Of all aspects of writing Cook likes best is the revision and polishing of drafts. Even when reading books written by other authors he sees ways to revise their prose. It is for this reason that he decided to put out an anthology, as he enjoys working with writers to make a collection of stories the best it can be.

Kathy Cook, Editor, holds a Bachelor’s in English and a Master’s in Library Media. Despite these areas of study, her greatest talent is editing. She rarely needs to rely on books on grammar to solve a grammatical problem.

BANJAXED BOOKS is a mom and pop operation, but that should not imply a sophomoric concern. G. Allen has published anthologies of his own work and appeared in collections compiled by other editors. Kathy has edited (for the better) all of his output for the past thirteen years.

Submission deadline is June 30, 2017.

Publication is planned for mid-November, 2017. An official date will be announced ASAP. Chaos of Hard Clay will launch first on the Kindle. A paperback edition will come out soon thereafter.

If you are interested in sending a story, email it to:

Subject line: Submission, Chaos of Hard Clay, “Title of Story,” Word Count

(Example: Submission, Chaos of Hard Clay, “Melty Faces,” 3500 Words)

Please follow the guidelines. Failure to do so could result in a lack of interest in your hard work!

If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at the above email. Include Chaos of Hard Clay in the subject line of any query.

Word count for each story should fall between 1500 and 7000 words. At this time, we are not looking for stories that fall below or above that count.

Submit stories in .doc or .docx. We’ll take .rtf, but no pdf, please.

Please submit only one story. Simultaneous submissions are okay–grumble, grumble–and we will withdraw a story placed elsewhere before our launch. We are currently not in the market for reprints.

The mood of each piece is up to the discretion of the author–tragic, funny, or any combination. If your characters use strong language, please feel free to write in their voice. Do not, however, add harsh language just to seem “cool” or “literate.” Same with sex and violence. No incest, underage sex, or bestiality. (The line must be drawn somewhere.) Other than that–give your imagination sway.

Consider joining the post-apocalypse genre with another–hardboiled detective, for instance, or Old West. (I’ve read examples of both, but feel free to use either example, if you want.)

The editors of BANJAXED BOOKS request all characters be fictional. We do not wish to inhibit your creative vibe, but neither do we want hellish futures brought about by living presidents, current or ex, religious leaders (living or recently deceased), or your ex-girl/boyfriend. Characters out of antiquity will be considered–especially if they play a benign role in the tale–but we make no guarantees. Best to populate your world with characters made up from whole cloth.

Writers whose work is selected will receive $10 upon publication. We wish we could pay more for your quality writing, but we are a new outfit–any understanding will be appreciated. We are currently mulling over paying by check or Paypal. We will inform accepted authors upon contact.

Authors will also receive one free print copy once the paperback is available. Bear in mind: In can take several weeks to produce a paperback book. It may be a few weeks after you receive payment before you receive your book.

We at BANJAXED BOOKS realize that most authors prefer payment upon acceptance, but as this is the first anthology of many to come we must do everything to help the series flourish. We also recognize that $25 is the typical minimum payment in these cases–as befits several of the genre organizations–but, again, the $10 flat fee will help us publish more anthologies at a higher author rate in the future. All proceeds go to the next volume. BANJAXED does not expect to make money on this endeavor for at least two years.

If your work is not accepted, please do not go into histrionics. BANJAXED BOOKS plans to put out various anthologies, and it would be a pity to ruin your chances of being included by acting a fool. In any case, we will endeavor to give as much feedback as possible.

If your work is accepted–but needs retooling–please work with us to make your story the best it can be.

Thank you for your interest. We cannot wait to read your stories. Have fun, and try to formulate something truly original. We have faith in you.

Executive Editor,

G. Allen Cook
